E. Jakarta PPKD Provides Barista Training for Coached and Disabled Residents

Some 40 participants take part in barista and roasting training held by the East Jakarta Regional Job Training Center (PPKD). The training, which started Monday (6/24), is held for 20 working days.

Hope they will have skills for entrepreneurship

East Jakarta PPKD Head, Teguh Hendarwan said that from 40 participants, five were coached residents from the Cipinang Class II Narcotics Prison and seven people with special needs or disabilities. The rest were the general public.

They were given 20 percent theoretical material and 80 percent practical material on how to process coffee beans using sophisticated machines.

They were very enthusiastic about participating. During the training, they were also accompanied by a sign language guide.

"Public interest was very high, with more than 100 people registering to take part in the barista training. However, we limit it to only 40 people," he expressed.

After training, they were required to take part in a competition test to get a certificate. But, they have to pass the competency test first. These certificates were from the East Jakarta PPKD and the National Professional Certificate Agency (BNSP).

Law and Human Rights Ministry's Jakarta Regional Office Head, Andika Dwi Prasetya explained barista and bakery training is one form of material provided for inmates in prisons in Jakarta, the result of synergy with the Jakarta Provincial Government and 13 state-owned companies (BUMNs).

"Hope they will have skills for entrepreneurship, instead of plunging back into the world of crime," he explained.

The training received appreciation from one of the participants, Maria Goretti Yulias (42) who also serves as Secretary of the Indonesian Association of Disabled People (PPDI).
